Ode to the Phone
A poem I wrote in dedication to my phone. Also going to start posting weekly on Tuesdays!!
Fake personalities, fake smiles, and fake laughs.
Like an addiction there’s no turning back
People in need of a desperate rehab and they need it bad
The dean takes away phones but that’s okay
because I was going to do it anyway
we live in a society deceived by their screens
filters desperately trying to cover up blotches and blemishes
only to portray the perfect version of ourselves
photo shop ultimately determines our impossible beauty standards
fake news brings happy deception instead of truth
phones shield the insecure and vulnerable behind screens
social media pages filled with white teeth, fake tans, and perfect bodies
anything other than that, is ugly
Emojis express emotions for us
Videos show exactly what we are doing
Pictures tell who we are with
One thing said over text can be interpreted to mean something completely different.
a picture ultimately determines our attitude
beauty standards become more and more evident in today’s society
we live in a society dependent on compliments to feel good about themselves
because looking in the mirror and telling yourself you are beautiful isn’t enough
Why are their opinions more important than my own?
While most fall for this deceitful nature,
Like a hawk, I am fully aware of the problem
Entranced by the beauty around it, that I embrace how the world should be
So, I am missing out? Or are you?
Though I can’t see what’s on her story or what he tweeted
I can see what’s actually going on through my contact lens not my phone lens
The best version of yourself isn’t the perfect person you portray in the screen
It’s the insecure person you hide behind the screen.
